Critical care matters

Critical Care is underdeveloped in Malawi. Majority of staff working in critical care areas have no specialised training in critical care. Critical Care does not have to be expensive. Simple interventions save lives. These simple interventions are the basics of critical care.

Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Organised its first collaborative training in Critical Care. The training focused on going back to the basics of patients assessment and acute and critical care. Representantives from all the critical care units; ICUs, HDUs, Emergency Departments etc. It consisted of short lectures and more practical scenarios. Participants were encouraged to practice all the scenarios.

Discussion and plans were made to improve the quality of critical care and collaboration within QECH. Participant from all departments volunteered to take up roles and made dead lines of when change should be implemented.
