What I learned in Sweden

An easy but efficient way to learn how to do the same thing you do every day differently is by observing others do the same thing differently. There is more to it than what meets the eye. Its one of the important advantages of exchanges.

Health care is dynamic. The practice today will not be the same 10 years from now. Mankind is investing in the improvement of current state of living. Either telling you sugar is bad or telling you exercise daily. It’s all in the effort to improve the quality of life. Health care is one field which is often different according to the economic status of the country. Which means high income countries stand a better chance of saving lives more than low income countries. One might think this is highly influenced by the high resources high income countries have. As much as resources play a role in this, there are other factors that are also very important and do not require high resources.

During my short period of stay there I observed special attention being given to the communication among the staff and to patients and their families. We need to know our patients and communicate what we know about our patients to the next person who comes to take care of the same patient. It’s not enough to talk about the vital signs and what medication they are on. The patient is a human being, with family, they have hobbies, and they have their own fears which need to be addressed on a personal level.

Preparation preparation! preparation!. No one has seen it all in the hospital even with 50 years of experience. There is always an emergency when we least expect it. It saves time when we prepare and anticipate that something bad could happen. Taking time to talk about possible risks before doing a procedure is very important. Never skip this step. It was amazing to see this is habitual at Karolinska. Surely we don’t need high resources to do that. #Timeouts

A glass of Soda after work wouldn’t hurt with colleagues. Just watch your sugar intake .Social interactions after work with your workmates helps to improve a good work relationship.

It is possible to improve the quality of care by first improving how we work. Lets work towards improving one another, and be the change we wanna see in others.

Special thanks to Life support foundation for making this possible. It was really and amazing experience to be there and see how things are done differently. http://www.lifesupportfoundation.org/

The list is very long, but i try to make my blog post short.
